The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
