Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
